Feeling Strong; Having a Mind & Body Connection

The Goddess Brigid Painting by Addie Hirschten

Recently, I have started running outside again. I love getting outside and moving my body in this way. This feels like a luxury after healing from some physical injuries that made running outside impossible for me for several years. As I run, I am doing so much more than caring for my physical body through exercise. I am caring for my mind. Did you know that exercise has been proven to be one of the best things we can do for mental health? Simply getting our bodies in motion has the power to change how we feel and how we think.

While running, I can regulate my emotions and my stress responses. I can release tension and let go of any negativity I am feeling. I can ground myself in my footsteps on the pavement and in the flow of movement and breath. I process thoughts and allow creativity to flow. Some of the best ideas have come to me while I run. I can get clear and no distractions are pulling my attention. Sometimes, I find myself reciting mantras as I run. One of my favorites is “I am strong and healthy in my body, mind, and spirit.” “I am so grateful.”

Not everyone is a runner, and that’s okay! What is essential is movement. Sometimes, my body says, “I can’t run today.” I listen and honor its message. I walk instead. Sometimes, my body says, “It’s time for me to rest.” Perhaps a leisurely walk or gentle yoga feels most aligned in that case. Sometimes, my body says it wants to lift weights. I honor that. Listening is an exercise in honoring the body. Injury can undoubtedly come when we are in our heads thinking that we have to push ourselves beyond what our bodies are capable of in a moment. Our bodies speak to us, and if we listen closely, we can learn to care for ourselves in a way that is most aligned with us.

This mind-body alignment can make us feel empowered and strong in body, mind, and spirit. Do you know how to listen to your body? This skill can be learned. First, close your eyes. Bring awareness to your body. Is there an area of the body speaking to you? What is it saying?

Another practice you can do is journal. Ask yourself, " What does my body need from me today?” And listen to your response. There are many ways to cultivate a connection with our bodies. Would you like to learn how to grow a mind-body connection? This is part of what I do in holistic counseling. Is this resonating? The next step in your journey is to book a time with me.
